Organic Asparagus ‘Vegalim’ is a green perennial variety and will be delivered as a dormant root or crown. The most distinctive feature of green asparagus is obviously the green colour of its stems. Unlike white asparagus, green asparagus grows above ground, exposed to sunlight, facilitating photosynthesis. The cultivation of green asparagus is similar to that of white asparagus, but with one significant difference: the asparagus are not covered with soil during growth. Growing above ground leaves them unprotected from sunlight, resulting in the green colouration.

Green asparagus often boasts a slightly more robust flavour than white asparagus. They also tend to be a bit more tender and juicy. Green asparagus is rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and fiber, serving as a good source of antioxidants.

Harvesting:
Commence harvesting only in the second year after planting the asparagus crowns. In the first year, it is crucial to allow the plants to grow and strengthen.

The harvesting of green asparagus crowns begins when the stems reach the desired height, typically between 20-25 centimeters. They can be cut with a knife just above the soil surface. The harvesting season for green asparagus is often slightly longer than that of white asparagus. It starts in spring and may extend into early summer, depending on growth conditions and climate.

How, Where, and When to Plant Asparagus Crowns:
The ideal time to plant green asparagus crowns is in early spring, after the soil has warmed but before asparagus enters its active growth phase.

Dig trenches approximately 15 to 20 centimeters deep, leaving at least 1 meter of space between trenches. Place the asparagus crowns in the trench with the buds facing upward, allowing about 30 to 45 centimeters of space between each crown. Cover the crowns with about 5 to 8 centimeters of soil. As the asparagus grows, gradually add more soil until the trench is leveled with the soil surface.

If you have only one asparagus to try, plant it at the same depth as described above but without the trench.

Thoroughly water the asparagus beds after planting to settle the soil and give the asparagus a good start. Consider mulching the asparagus beds to retain moisture, reduce weed growth, and stabilize soil temperature.

Location and Soil: Green Asparagus ‘Vegalim’ thrives best in full sun, in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Well-draining soil is crucial to prevent root rot. Sandy soil is ideal, but light loam is also suitable. Avoid heavy clay soil.

Care:
Asparagus requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water deeply to ensure the roots stay well-hydrated. In autumn, when the plant has completely withered, trim the remains to ground level to prevent pests and diseases.

Well-maintained asparagus beds can last for decades. Continue to feed the plants and ensure good soil health.

Propagation:
Over time, asparagus beds may become thicker. You can choose to divide older plants to obtain new root cuttings. Plant the root cuttings again in the desired location.

Edible:
Green asparagus can be prepared in various ways, including roasting, grilling, steaming, or boiling. Due to their tenderness, they often require a shorter cooking time than white asparagus.
