Drought Tolerant Plants

Discover our range of beautiful and hardy bare root perennial plants that are perfectly tolerant to drought. In our unpredictable summers, with increasingly long periods of drought, it is wise to have plants in your garden that can withstand drought well. And even if we don’t suffer from drought, drought-tolerant plant species are useful. As you don’t have to water them so often.

Drought-resistant plants are naturally adapted to harsh conditions. However, it is still essential to provide these plants with enough water when first planted. Young plants need to build a strong and deep root system before they can resist drought. In addition, make sure to not over-fertilise them, as excess can damage the roots of the plant.

Drainage is also of the essence, so if your soil is heavy clay, consider building a raised bed to give the plants the right conditions; 15cm will do the job. Excess water will drain downwards. Drought-resistant plants can also be kept perfectly well in pots on balconies or patios, as plants in pots generally dry out faster.

Most drought-resistant plants are also sun-loving. If planted in the shade, they may flower less or lose their leaves. So plant them where they will thrive best: (usually) in poor soil, in a sunny position.
