Nepeta

Nepeta is a Lamiaceae flowering plant genus that includes approximately 250 species native to Southern and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Africa, as well as naturalised species in North America and New Zealand.

These plants bear white or purple flowers; some species have bluish flowers. All nepeta species are small shrubs or herbaceous perennials, maturing at 10–24 inches tall. They also grow to about 12–24 inches in width. Some more compact varieties can grow to over 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide.

Derived from the Latin genus name, Nepeta was an ancient Etruscan city. Nepeta species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths).
