Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’ stands at a height of approximately 100 cm. A superbly versatile, mound-forming, evergreen grass, ‘Goldtau’ flourishes in both sun and light shade. Silvery, reddish-brown flower spikes grace its presence from early to late summer, emerging above dense mounds of slender, arching, mid-green leaves that endure well into autumn. The feathery inflorescences of this elegant, award-winning ornamental grass mature to a soft golden yellow, creating a shimmering, golden cloud when touched by light. Compact and easy-to-grow, it adds allure when planted among perennials, grouped towards the front of a border, or in a rock garden.
Tufted hair grass is increasingly popular in perennial borders. The plant does not spread aggressively but forms clumps.
It thrives in a sunny location, but Deschampsia cespitosa also tolerates partial shade. Deschampsia goes well with Gaura, Echinacea, Salvia nemorosa, and roses, among others.
Maintenance involves trimming in March. Remove the faded flower heads in late winter before new growth appears. If the foliage looks tatty at that time of year, it can be cut back hard. In warm areas, the plant tends to self-seed freely, so remove unwanted seedlings as part of routine border maintenance.
