Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’, a fountain grass, is an elegant ornamental grass that reaches a height between 70 and 100 cm. The purple to purplish-brown flowering (large and thick plumes) of Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’ occurs from July to October. This variety forms large, broad clumps.
Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’ prefers a sunny position in a border. The soil for Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’ should not be too dry, and poorly-draining soils are not tolerated. Trim the faded plumes of Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’ in March. Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’ bears a strong resemblance to Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’, but the flower spikes are white and much larger, and the overall size of the plant is more robust.
