Approx. 20 organic vegetable seeds per gardener’s packet
Hokus, an open-pollinated variety of gherkin, reaches its prime when harvested at approximately 10 cm in length. These robust and early-fruiting plants yield abundant, high-quality fruits. Ideally cultivated in outdoor settings, Hokus thrives in sheltered, sunny positions. When grown indoors, it’s advisable to remove male flowers.
Here’s a guide on how to cultivate Organic Gherkin Hokus:
- Begin by sowing seeds in pots or modules filled with high-quality organic compost between April and May. Transfer to 7 cm pots once the true leaves have developed.
- When transplanting to the permanent site, use canes or strings for support, keeping in mind the delicate nature of the stems. Take care during transplanting, and water cautiously to prevent damping off.
- For outdoor cucumbers, transplant in May or June after the risk of frost has passed. Support them with a wigwam of canes spaced 60 cm apart, and tie the plants as they grow.
- Commence harvesting from late June onwards, making it a regular practice.
Considerations for pests and diseases:
Cucumbers may be susceptible to aphids, red spider mites, cucumber mosaic virus, and mildew.
In the kitchen, cucumbers offer remarkable versatility beyond traditional uses. They pair exceptionally well with mint and dill, contributing to dishes like tabbouleh, raita, and tzatziki. Additionally, cucumbers can be delightful when pickled.
