Organic Herb Plug Plants
To plant, choose a sunny or partly shaded spot with well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by loosening it and mixing in some organic compost to improve fertility and drainage. Carefully remove the plug plant from its container and plant it at the same depth as it was growing, spacing each according to the variety’s mature size—generally between 20 to 30 cm apart. Water well after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.
Caring for organic herb plugs involves regular watering, especially during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging as most herbs prefer slightly drier conditions. Applying a light mulch can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pinch back or harvest leaves frequently to encourage bushy growth and prevent flowering in herbs like thyme, marjoram, and basil, which can lead to a decline in leaf flavour. Many herbs, such as dill and valerian, will benefit from cutting back after flowering to promote new growth or prevent self-seeding if not desired.
These herbs are incredibly versatile in the kitchen and beyond. Strawberry Mint adds a refreshing, fruity twist to teas, salads, and desserts, while Parsley and Thyme are essential flavour bases in countless dishes. Dill is perfect for pickling and seasoning fish or potatoes, and Marjoram and Basil bring sweet, aromatic notes to Mediterranean recipes. Valerian, known for its calming properties, is often used in herbal teas and natural remedies.
By planting and caring for organic herb plugs, gardeners can enjoy a sustainable, fresh supply of flavourful herbs throughout the growing season, enhancing both cooking and wellbeing naturally.
