Grow your own saffron – one of the world’s most precious spices – organically in your own garden.
Organic Crocus ‘Sativus’, better known as the Saffron Crocus, is a truly special autumn-flowering crocus. Delicate lilac-purple flowers emerge in autumn, each revealing the distinctive deep-red stigmas that are harvested and dried to produce genuine saffron.
Beautiful as well as useful, Crocus sativus is perfect for sunny borders, raised beds and containers. Plant the bulbs in a warm, sunny position with well-drained soil and enjoy an elegant display of purple flowers at a time when much of the garden is beginning to quieten down.
The real magic is hidden inside each flower. The vivid red saffron threads can be carefully picked by hand, gently dried and stored for use in the kitchen. Home-grown saffron can be used to add its distinctive colour, aroma and flavour to dishes including risottos, paella, curries, breads and desserts.
